The next generation of new homes with a "Net-Zero" energy deisign have come to Arizona. Meritage Homes has started offering net-zero, super efficient homes with a starting price of $185,000. These homes are affordable next generation energy efficient homes. All of the net-zero homes come with a HERS certified third party valadiation certificate. Meritage hopes to bring the Net-Zero home to Tucson soon.
The Home Energy Rating System index (HERS) for the net-zero homes equals 0. This means that under normal living conditions a year's worth of energy bills should be offset by the power generated thru the solar panels on the roof. By comparison, an Energy Star home has a HERS rating of 85 and a standard code built new home has a rating of 100. Finally, the least energy efficient home has an average HERS rating of 130. So a net-zero rated home is far superior in energy savings and this fact alone makes them a superior home over the vast majority of homes built in America, today.
